I Have a Problem with My Student Loans, How Can I File a Complaint About My Issue?

If you have problems with your student loans, you may be able to get help with your problem by contacting your lender or loan servicer’s complaint department. If your problem is not resolved, you can try a couple of other places that might be able to help:

  • File a complaint with the Department of Education Federal Student Aid Ombudsman office.
  • File a complaint with your state student loan ombudsman or advocate (if they have one) or your state attorney general.
  • If your issue involves your school, you can consider filing a complaint with your state’s higher education agency .
  • If your issue has to do with private loans or student loan servicing, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Federal Protection Bureau (CFPB), a federal agency that works on protecting consumers, or the Federal Trade Commission, which also protects consumers.

If you still aren’t able to resolve your issue, you might consider seeking legal assistance. Reach out to a local legal aid for assistance.

What is an ombudsman?

An ombudsman is a public advocate who usually works in a government agency to investigate complaints and help people resolve their problems.
