State, School, & Employer Loan Relief

States, schools, and some employers sometimes offer loan cancellation and loan repayment assistance programs (LRAP) to provide financial assistance to people who have student loan debt. Sometimes they are offered as an incentive to recruit people to work in a particular field or location. These programs vary a lot. Some cancellation programs and LRAPs require that you work in public interest or the government, while others may offer it solely as a benefit of your employment or the community you live in.

If you have been a victim of a fraudulent school, your state may offer additional loan relief through a state tuition recovery fund (STRFs). States that offer STRFs include: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Check with your state, school, or employer to see if they offer any cancellation, LRAP, STRF, or other relief programs.

TIP: Check your state’s department or education or higher education website to see if they offer student loan cancellation, LRAP, STRF, or other relief.
